The «Richard Schäfer» Collection
Both individuals who created these collections were not only united by the same name — Richard Schäfer, Senior and Junior. In matters concerning philately, father and son in fact were of the same mind, sharing the same selective awareness of quality. They created two important specialized Switzerland collections that are without parallel.
Richard Schäfer Junior concentrated on «mixed frankings with «Strubel» issues and «Sitting Helvetia», while Richard Schäfer Senior compiled the outstanding object, «Sitting Helvetia – Destinations» with countless rare covers during his long collector's life. This collection had an almost legendary reputation, for it served as the basis for the research activities of the great philatelist Schäfer Senior and his important standard work «1459–1907 – Der Briefverkehr Schweiz – Ausland» (1459–1907 – Swiss Written Correspondence — Abroad).
Mr Schäfer received the Grand Prix for his magnificent exhibit both in Norway in 1997 and in Moscow in 1997. And he was a candidate for the Prix D'Honneur in Nuremberg.
Most of the Swiss foreign covers that were sold from the Schäfer collection, including prize pieces from the earlier large collections of «Anderegg, Winterstein, Fuchs and Wegst», are illustrated in color in Richard Schäfer's book. This thoroughly successful offer is rightfully considered sensational: never before have Swiss covers from this epoch sent abroad been offered in such abundance and quality. At the Rapp auction of autumn 1995, the collections of the Schäfers, Senior and Junior, were united in an incomparable offer and brought in, at approximately three-quarters of a million Swiss francs, a result that far exceeded all estimates.

Schweiz – Chambery (Frankreich): Strubel 20 Rp. gelorange mit Sitzender Helvetia 20 Rp. orange als portogerechte 40 Rp.-Frankatur von Basel 4.3.1863 nach Chambery, Savoyen. Frühdatum für 20 Rp. Sitzende Helvetia.
Nur drei Briefe mit Mischfrankatur zweier 20 Rp.-Marken bekannt. Ein Spitzenstück! Attest Rellstab (1993) und BPB. SBK-Nr. 25G + 32

Schweiz – London (Grossbritannien): Strubel Seidenpapier 1 Fr. violettgrau mit Sitzender Helvetia 20 Rp. orange übergehend entwertet mit Doppelkreisstempel VEVEY 26 JUIN 63 S.6 auf blauem Brief mit rotem Cachet d'entré und LONDON PAID über Frankreich nach London.
Gemäss Winterstein sind nur wenige solche Mischfrankaturen 1 Fr. mit 20 Rp. bekannt. Mit Seidenpapier 1 Fr. vermutlich ein Unikat! Aus der Benedick-Sammlung. Attest WEid und BPB.

Schweiz – Natal (Südafrika): Tüblibrief 5 Rp. braun mit Sitzender Helvetia 2 Rp. oliv, 3 Rp. schwarz, 5 Rp. braun, 10 Rp. rot, 20 Rp. orange, 25 Rp. grün und 40 Rp. grau, schön übergehend entwertet mit Brückenstempel BERN FILIALE 18VI80VIII, mit privatem, blauem CHARGE oben rechts und rotem REGISTERED LONDON der Kantonalbank nach Pietermaritzburg.
Die Siebenfarbenfrankatur auf Tüblibrief ist zweifellos das Spitzenstück der Schäfer-Sammlung. Sie wurde 1987 privat von einem Londoner Auktionshaus erworben und wurde noch nie öffentlich angeboten.
